Y’s Men’s Club deliver scholarships

Y's Men's Scholarships

Broken Hill Y’s Men’s Club President, Geoff Webb, was joined by Workies Club President Colin DeGoumois to present two $5000 scholarships to two local high school graduates to help with expenses as they head off to university.

Former Willyama High School students April Hicks and Violet Holland have been chosen to each receive the $5000 Y’s Men’s Club Educational Scholarships.

“Sarah Rolton from Country Universities Centre told me about the scholarship,” April told the Truth.

“On February 15 I head off to University of Wollongong, which I’m really excited for and I’ll be studying early childhood teaching. I might look at doing an extra year to do primary teaching as well so the scholarship will really help with getting a computer.

“I’m just very grateful and looking forward to doing my four years in Wollongong and then coming back here to teach.”

Violet told us she’s off to Flinders University to do a three-year paramedicine degree.

“I plan to come back to Broken Hill if I get a job, so right now I’m just very excited and very grateful. The scholarship will help a lot to cover expenses while I’m in Adelaide,” she said.

The two students each receive an initial $2500 as they head off to university, followed by an additional $2500 upon successful completion of their first semester.

Mr Webb says the Club review all applications each year and follow them up with an interview.

“We select people on merit in terms of how well they’ve done but mostly it’s about their need, so we assess them on their need and we’re hoping they’ll be able to be successful in their studies.

“We’ve had some wonderful responses over the years from people who have come back to Broken Hill and thanked us very much for the scholarship. It’s just a wonderful thing to be able to support local students.

“Most of our money comes via the Workies Club through the meat tray raffles but we also have a merry-go-round, and we do barbeques all over the place. The local Y’s Men’s Club makes money from all sorts of things so it’s our privilege to help the people of Broken Hill,” Mr Webb said.
