West women’s chance to defend title

West Womens vs North
by Peter Johnston

Having won all the premierships since the start of women’s cricket in Broken Hill, West find themselves in a new position this season having to go through a knock out Semi-Final to get the chance to keep their unbeaten Final’s record intact.

Their opponents today, South, face the exciting prospect of playing in their first Final of any kind and they will lap up the atmosphere after what has been their best season of cricket.

West will start favourites in this game due to their great Finals experience but the game will be no pushover as the Roos have improved dramatically this season and could be capable of causing an upset.

Cumming, Harrington and Wilson form the nucleus of West’s batting spine, though they will sorely miss Louise Schofield’s great batting expertise and leadership.

South’s Johns, Wylie, Sloane, and Drenkhahn have come off a good season with the bat and will make their presence felt.

West may have an edge in the bowling department. Knott, Wilson and Cuy have been pretty deadly with the ball this season and perhaps place it in a better spot more than their counterparts.

South will look to Wylie, Johns and Drenkhahn to do the bulk of the bowling but they perhaps lack the penetration of West’s bowlers. This should prove to be the area where West will gain the ascendancy.
