West Cricket Club Celebrate 100 Years

After their nail biting one wicket victory over North during the day on Saturday, focus switched to the official celebrations for West Cricket Clubs’ 100-year anniversary in the evening with an event held at the Musicians Club.

The night was a celebration of all thing’s West – past, present and future – and it was a complete sell out with the 162 tickets gone within days.

Kathy Ferguson, President of West Cricket Club, who is also a teacher’s aide at North Primary School, and Malana Attard, who is a hairdresser as well as secretary/treasurer at the club, teamed up to make the event happen. It helps that they are also close mates.

“We’ve been friends for a long time. Our husbands work together, and our kids all grew up playing sport together,” Ms Attard said

“We just work together,” said Ms Ferguson. “We’re the sort of people that if there is something that needs to be done, we just get it done.”

West Cricket Club alumni Johnny Lynch emmceed the evening and the event also featured legendary Aussie Test cricketer and commentator Kerry O’Keefe as guest speaker. Mr O’Keefe was a massive hit and had the audience in the palm of his hand during his address.

“It was such a big get for the club to land someone of Kerry O’Keefe’s quality,” Ms Attard told us.

Without question the main event was the Hall of Fame inductions. Twenty-eight West Cricket Club alumni were inducted from a range of eras. A further seven were elevated to Legend status within the club.

Hall of Fame inductees were chosen based on Premierships played, amount of time at the club and what they’ve done for the club in terms of coaching or administration.

The Legends were judged on a slightly different benchmark. Years of service was a big contributing factor when that list was being put together.

“The night was a big success, all the feedback we have received has been so positive. We’d like to thank The Musicians Club, everyone who came from interstate and everyone who is a part of the West Cricket Club,” Ms Attard said.
