Teen band Scream Street to play first-ever gig

Scream Street

Three Willyama High School friends will be taking to the stage for the first time, as grunge rock band, Scream Street.

The teen grunge rockers three-piece band, made up of 13-year-olds Louis Lukins (guitar and vocals), Marcus Spencer (bass) and Kye Turley (drums) will be playing their first-ever show on Saturday, March 4 at Central Broken Hill Football Club (Memorial Oval), as the opening act for Convict Class.

The trio – who are influenced by the likes of other bands that started out young, including Nirvana, Silverchair and Foo Fighters – said that while there was a touch of nervousness, they were looking forward to the experience and were thankful for the opportunity.

“We can’t wait to do it. It’s going to be a lot of fun,” Kye told us.

“We are the warm-up band, we are going first so I don’t think it’ll get too rowdy, but it’ll still be really good and we’d love to play in front of people. It’s just going to be great.”

Louis added, “we’re all excited and ready for it”, while Marcus said he’s, “so happy that we’ve got this far”.

Ever since being approached to play and accepting the offer, the band has been hard at work practicing both at school and at home, refining and fine-tuning their sound in preparation for the show.

“It’s been kind of stressful, because it’s only three weeks away now and we’ve been trying to get as many practices in a week as we can and we’re practicing at school a lot in the music rooms and it’s been really good,” Kye said.

“It’s been fun though, it really has been fun. It’s been a new experience for me,” Marcus said.

Scream Street will be playing a mixture of covers and original songs on the night, and will be hoping this chance to play leads to more down the track.

“Sometimes there’re bands that come down or local bands that play in Broken Hill, and it’s really good to watch them and we sort of take that and go ‘we should do that’,” Kye said.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased on the door at the Saturday, March 4 gig at Central Broken Hill Football Club with Convict Class, Led Affected and Jon Doe & The Moonlighters.
