Alma’s lucky 13, West beat Joeys

The action kicked off Sunday in round five of the Broken Hill Soccer Association’s women’s competition with West taking on St Joes and Alma facing a struggling Celtic.

The results only widened the gulf between the top of the competition and those teams struggling at the bottom.

West took on St Joes, looking to widen their gap at the top of the table over Alma, and they did so with aplomb.

George Bugeja’s side were never really headed as they dismantled St Joes’ defence on their way to a comfortable 5-1 victory, consolidating their spot at the top of the BHSA women’s competition standings.

“The girls kept their shape well and knocked the ball around nicely,” George told the Truth.

“The margin could have been even bigger, that’s how much possession we had. It was really nice to watch.”

West are blessed with an abundance of talent assisting them in their dominance of the competition this year.

“It’s good to know you’re going to put a competitive team on the park each week,” coach Bugeja told us.

In the other fixture in the women’s competition, The Mighty Goats of Alma needed a victory over a struggling Celtic to keep pace with West at the top of the table. The pressure was on Alma to deliver against the bottom club in the league, and deliver they did with an incredible 13-0 thrashing of a Celtic side who must be finding it hard to turn up each week.

The result was never in doubt as the goals flew in for Codey Ralph’s side, maintaining pressure on West at the top of the league in what is fast becoming a two-horse race.

Despite the margin of the victory, coach Ralph wasn’t totally satisfied with his side’s first half performance but found it hard to fault the avalanche of goals that came about in the second.

“Our first half was a bit sketchy. We didn’t really play their game as well as we should have. There was a little chat about that at half time. In the second half we played much better.”

Exciting young forward Heaven Celotto stole the show for the Goats with an incredible four goal performance that put the exclamation point on a dominant victory.

“We went into the game wanting to score a lot of goals to level the playing field and catch up to West,” Heaven told the Truth.

“And as for me scoring, I was just there. And my teammates kept finding me.”

In next week’s round six fixtures we have a mouth-watering top of the table clash between West and Alma, whilst St Joes take on Celtic – the loser of that match can probably begin focussing on next season.

Elsewhere, in the men’s A-Grade competition, there wasn’t quite as many goals scored, with Alma and Celtic playing out a scoreless draw, and St Joes recording a 2-0 victory over West Panthers.
