South crack 200 as Schorn kicks 12

SOUTH vs WEST

South has strengthened its grip on the A-Grade, with a 182-point thumping of West at Alma Oval in the weekend’s Round 11 fixture – South’s largest-winning margin, and biggest score of the season.

South’s dominance showed across a full four-quarter effort, hitting the scoreboard at a consistent rate, while holding down the defensive end by not allowing West too many chances to get forward. The Roos didn’t slow down at any point, highlighted by an 11-goal fourth quarter as the team’s total ticked over 200 points.

Cody Schorn kicked a season-high 12 goals for the Roos, taking his season tally to 58 in just seven games. Harrison Butcher backed up his teammate by kicking seven goals. Daniel Milne scored two goals for West who had a further three individual goalkickers.

“We put four quarters together. Putting the whole four quarters together now, game after game, is pleasing for the backend of the season,” South coach, Craig Thomas, told the Truth.

“We still wanted to play the game out. We were just playing to our systems and everyone playing their role. I’m just really pleased with the way the team is starting to come together now and everyone playing their role, that’s the most important part. No one’s trying to get above or be bigger than the team itself and we’re starting to get some good results.”

West coach, Nathan Pearce, labelled South ‘too strong’, adding, “they moved the ball really well and we were just too slow to react”.

“I’m still pretty happy with our group. I mean, a 200-point loss, you have to be a little bit disappointed, a little bit embarrassed, but I’m still happy with where our group is. I still think we’ve got the game plan and the attitude to beat anyone on the day and we’ve proven that – we’re the only team to have beaten everyone this season – so we just keep staying positive.”

SOUTH 7.5 14.10 22.13 33.16 214
WEST 1.1 3.1 4.2 5.2 32

 NORTH vs CENTRAL

In an often scrappy contest, North powered on for a 63-point win over Central at Jubilee Oval to complete Round 11 in the A-Grade comp.

Both teams were hitting the scoreboard in each of the four quarters, but it was the Bulldogs who found the sticks more than their opponents.

Jayden Kelly kicked five goals for the Roos in a season-best showing, while Shane Dalby and Cooper Oates kicked three apiece. For Central, Samuel Wilson slotted three goals, with Mitchell Reberger (two) and Josh Hanford (one) getting on the scoresheet too.

“I think we played our brand of footy over a longer period of time this week. On the weekend, we actually played four quarters of footy in and out, which was good and promising,” North coach, Mark Pitt, told us.

“Unfortunately, we got the ball inside 50 and we didn’t capitalise by hitting scoreboard pressure – that was probably our only negative downfall – and also trying to transfer the ball back into corridor by foot, we missed a lot of targets there as well.”

Central coach, Sheldon Hall, said North set up really well defensively and wrestled back the advantage quickly, not allowing his side to get a run on and apply consistent scoreboard pressure,

“We just couldn’t win any momentum in the midfield to get us driving, they were just too good around the contest,” he told us.

TEAM Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 TOTAL
NORTH 4.4 6.10 10.12 14.16 100
CENTRAL 2.0 3.0 4.1 6.1 37

This weekend coming, North celebrates its Old Timers weekend by hosting West at Jubilee Oval, while Central host South at Memorial Oval. Both fixtures get underway from 2.30pm.
