Skydiving dropping in to Broken Hill

SA Skydiving is returning to Broken Hill in April to provide those residents of the Silver City with no fear of heights an unforgettable experience as they parachute out of an plane from 15,000 feet up in the air.

The longest-running skydiving operation in South Australia, SA Skydiving will set-up a base at Broken Hill Airport on Sunday, April 2. It’ll be the third time the company has come to Broken Hill, previously offering the heart-racing experience in both 2019 and 2022.

“The whole objective is to try and take our skydiving operation on the roads to all different parts of regional South Australia to give people a chance to jump over their hometown,” SA Skydiving Manager, Matt Teager, told the Barrier Truth.

From Broken Hill Airport, the company will be providing skydives of three different heights – 9000 feet ($359), 12,000 feet ($469), and 15,000 ($539) feet – with a freefall speed of 220kph and five to six minutes spent under the parachute, taking in the scenery. There’s also a range of photo and video packages for skydivers to capture the memory and remember it for life. Last year’s bookings sold out, with Mr Teager warning it could happen again.

“We get a super strong response everywhere we go. It did book out last year. It hasn’t yet booked out this year but we’ve had a heap of bookings come in so there are still places available but we do recommend people get on it pretty quickly if they are keen,” Mr Teager said.

“We get a super strong response everywhere we go.”

While some may be cautious, even afraid, of the experience, Mr Teager encouraged people to try, and if you’re returning, there are advanced skills that can be shown and taught.

“One of the unique things about the skydiving is it’s very hard to explain, there’s nothing else like it in the world. My best advice is that if people are curious to know what it feels like, is to come and give it a go,” he said.

“We do get a lot of return jumpers as well, so for anyone who’s already jumped with us, absolutely welcome to come and jump with us again, maybe go to a higher height or we can actually teach them some more skills on the skydive as well… turning themselves in freefall or deploying and flying the parachutes.

“It’s one of the extreme activities in life, but I think it’s something everybody should give a go and understand what that freefall feeling feels like.”

Mr Teager is also keen to talk to local community groups to help out on the day with refreshments to those daring to skydive, and asks anyone interested to contact him.

“If there are any community groups that might like to be involved, if there’s a local scouts club or any community group that would like to come down, set up refreshments or drinks or anything like that, any way that we can further involve the community there, we’d be more than welcome to have a conversation,” he says Contact SA Skydiving on 08 8272 7888 or visit https://www.saskydiving.com.au/skydiving-south-australia/skydiving-adelaide/
