Silverton Series – The Bakery

Over the last few editions, we’ve been having a look at some of the unique businesses in outback oasis Silverton.

The small town, relying as it does on some local but mostly tourist traffic, was hit harder than most by the pandemic, but now it’s bounced back.

Events like the Mundi Mundi Bash, the Broken Heel festival and the dazzling landscape that lends itself to feature films, has helped the tiny town’s economy bounce back with a vengeance.

Our final stop is the Silverton Bakery. We spoke with owners Naomi and Steven Schmidt about their plans for the future and their relationship with the place they call home.

A Hollywood favourite

The Schmidts have been married for 39 years and they purchased the bakery in 2017. When they secured the location, it looked nothing like it does now.

“It was just a shed when we bought it,” Mr Schmidt says. “We really developed the bakery.”

The couple added a kitchen, expanded the dining area, and added the veranda. What once was a shed is now a place that serves some of the best pastries in the Far West of New South Wales. Something confirmed by the cast and crew of the Mad Max – Furiosa team who stopped in regularly while they were filming in and around Silverton.

‘We became the go-to place for lunches, morning teas and afternoon teas. Some of the favourites were our chicken curry pie and our chocolate and caramel ganache tarts,” Mrs Schmidt says.

Having spent most of their lives in Silverton, the pair are unfazed by the some of the more colourful goings on in the tiny town.

“Everything is normal. It might be colourful to other people, but to us it is just an everyday occurrence”, laughs Mrs Schmidt when we ask her about the donkeys that were roaming around the main street when we arrived.

It’s not just Hollywood big wigs who enjoy the food and coffee on offer at Silverton Bakery. The staff of this very paper are big fans of the menu. So if you find yourself in the gorgeous surrounds of the tiny town of

Silverton, head into the bakery and order a vegetarian sausage roll, you won’t be disappointed.
