Local country musician and songwriter Charlotte Le Leivre has put Broken Hill in the spotlight in the music video for her latest single, Barrier Line, with the release showcasing the city’s outback landscapes and historical landmarks, as well as featuring a host of well-known identities from the Silver City including writer Jack Marx, camel guide Petah Devine and drag performers Amanda Screetly and Murray Codpiece.
Moving to Broken Hill in 2015, La Leivre says she shifted into a deep sense of connection and belonging in the thriving creative community in town, an aspect she aimed to reveal in the music video.
“Broken Hill really exceeded my initial impressions. It is one of the most interesting and quirky places I have lived,” Ms La Leivre said.
“Like other creatives, writers, musicians and painters I became captivated by the vast landscapes, diverse characters and rich histories of the region. In making this video, I wanted to capture the unique, rebellious and creative spirit of the town and the community I have made here.
“I had the most joyful time collaborating with this all-star Broken Hill cast to make this video. I really think that this sentiment shines through in the imagery. I’m so excited for viewers to see what we’ve created”.
The music video for Barrier Line was filmed, produced and edited by local journalist, musician and freelance filmmaker, Aimee Volkofsky, with the pair meeting several months after La Leivre’s move and leading to a friendship that has allowed the creative like-mindedness of the two to collaborate in many ways – songs, music events, campfire concerts and regional tours.
This, though, is the duo’s first film made together.
“Aimee and I share a passion for supporting and promoting music being made by people in regional areas. In making this video, we wanted to collaborate to showcase some of the vibrant and creative forces that exist here in Broken Hill,” Ms Le Leivre said.
