Silver City Cup prep underway

Preparations for the iconic Silver City Cup are well underway as we leave October in the dust and gallop headlong into November.

On November 12 the Cup returns to the Broken Hill events calendar, following a three-year absence and the anticipation is building ahead of the race amongst both locals and organisers.

One of the most important duties that needs to be completed, is the clearing of the track.

And this past week, with the help of Broken Hill Corrective Services [BHCS], that work has been done, leaving the track in pristine condition ahead of race day.

Overseer for Corrective Services in Broken Hill, Trevor Henderson, told us, “we are cleaning up all the weeds and tidying the racetrack for the big day.”

Corrective Services work isn’t just restricted to the racecourse, they also provide a valuable service to many organisations around Broken Hill, including the Jubilee Oval, and West Football Club.

“We’re doing some work at the golf course at the moment too,” Mr. Henderson said.

“We also get out to Silverton when we can, and also Aboriginal Landcare – we do a bit for them also.”

Officer Henderson also spoke to the benefit of the public seeing offenders working in the community.

“When the community sees these guys out there working and cleaning up – they get a benefit out of it as well.”

Silver City Racing Club president, Dave Gallagher, has thanked Broken Hill Corrective Services for the work they do for the club ahead of race days and their work in the wider community.

“If it wasn’t for these guys [BHCS] the race wouldn’t be as successful as it is,” Mr. Gallagher told us.

With the track being readied, it is all systems go for the family friendly race day.
