Scouts’ drive to get to World Jamboree

Kellie and Molly Molloy will be the first 3rd Broken Hill Sea Scouts to ever attend the quadrennial World Scout Jamboree, to be held in South Korea from August 1-12.

To assist in getting there and making the most of the program, the mother-daughter duo will be fundraising, including hosting a can and bottle drive this weekend.

The significance of the two-week long event – it’s the twenty-fifth annual event  – and the opportunities it presents is not lost on either Kellie or Molly, and being the first members from the local scout group to attend makes the pair proud to be representing scouts at an international level.

“There are so many things that I am looking forward to at this event,” Molly told the Barrier Truth.

“The greatest one is developing friendships with other scouts from around the world and fully experiencing what it feels like to be part of a world organisation.

“I have attended lots of camps with other scouts in Australia but this will be my first international event. Because of this, my hope is to be able to meet as many international scouts as I can to share my passion for scouting with them.”

Between 9am and 12pm this Sunday, Kellie and Molly – along with the group – will be holding a can and bottle drive to raise money to attend the World Scout Jamboree. You can drop cans or bottles off at the Scout Hall at 178 Iodide St. Alternatively, a pick-up option can be arranged.

“As you can imagine, this type of adventure comes with a price tag that would normally be out of reach for many of us to pay. Molly and I began our fundraising as soon as we found out that we were accepted,” Kellie told us.

“Since then, we have sold donuts, delivered 10,000 telephone books – and possibly another 10,000 more this year –, and held a firepit raffle. We have been extremely fortunate to receive funding from some local businesses and groups and we have an upcoming raffle with prizes from some very generous people and charities.

“The community has been so amazing in supporting us. These types of events highlight how amazing Broken Hill is and just how lucky we are to live here,” Kellie said.

“We definitely have the best name for scouts that live in the desert, and with that an amazing group of scouts and leaders. Hopefully Molly’s and my experiences will help pave the way for many other Broken Hill Sea scouts to attend future World Jamborees.”

If you’ve got cans and bottles lying around, head to the Scout Hall at 178 Iodide St between 9am and 12pm on Sunday, February 19 to drop them off. To arrange for a pick-up, call or text your address to 3rd Broken Hill Sea Scout Group Parent Committee Treasurer, Rebecca Polak, on 0407 973 470.
