Police and kids make a splash

Barrier Police Pool Day

Barrier Police District staff and 153 local kids made a big splash at the Broken Hill Regional Aquatic Centre Thursday in a police run event that organisers hope will become a fun annual monthly afternoon of community engagement between January to April.

With Barrier PD staff on the barbeque cooking up a storm to feed hungry youngsters, and Wilcannia Youth Liaison Officer Brendon Adams hitting the decks to DJ the event, Inspector Chris Wallace said the afternoon around the 50 metre pool was a great opportunity for local kids to hang out with Barrier PD Superintendent David Cooper and to see the playful side of the local police officers they may see out and about around the Silver City.

“Police were supported by PCYC staff who did several runs around town in the PCYC minibus picking up kids from home to bring to the pool, and we’re keen to do this again each month until April if we get the same level of enthusiasm as we’ve had here today,” said Inspector Wallace who organised the event after it was discussed at the Police Aboriginal Consultative Committee (PACC) meeting held last month.

“All kids are welcome no matter their age, where they’re from, or their level of swimming ability because we’ll have staff supporting the more reluctant swimmers in the toddlers pool and down the shallow end of the outdoor pool to keep an eye on them,” said Inspector Wallace.
