Plenty for youngsters during Youth Week

Youth Week is in full swing – it runs from April 11 to 21 – with plenty of activities planned for the enjoyment of the younger generation in Broken Hill.

City Council is giving young people the chance to showcase their talents at a Youth Market at Sturt Park this Friday, April 19 between 5.30pm and 8.30pm.

If you’re aged between 12 and 24 you’re eligible to host a free stall where you can showcase and sell your art, craft, music, or food creations.

“This is the first time I can remember where a market day has been purely focused on showcasing younger people’s talents, so hopefully we get lots of involvement from the schools and the general public come along and support our young people,” Council’s Community Development Coordinator, Rachel Merton, said.

“It’s an opportunity for young people to hone their performance skills, with musicians, comedians, poetry reading, and drama performances also being sought to enhance the market. This can be for beginners or seasoned performers, or even those HSC students studying arts-related courses to practice their performances before their exams.

“Likewise, young people with a flair for drawing, painting, jewellery, craft, culinary skills, cake decorating, face painting, the market will provide a space for them to display their wares and portfolios. Not everything has to be for sale.

“It takes a lot of effort put one’s creativity on display, so it is a great opportunity for the whole community to support our emerging artists across a whole range of artistic endeavours.”

The City Council is also offering its own school holiday program, complete with VR gaming (April 16-18 at the Civic Centre from 10am-4pm) and rock climbing (April 22 at Sturt Park from 10am-4pm). Both activities are free though bookings are essential and can be made via Council’s Events Calendar.
