Multicultural Comedy Gala plays for laughs

The Multicultural Comedy Gala is set to crack some laughs in Broken Hill next Saturday night, June 10 from 8pm and we’ve got some free tickets to give away.

Featuring a veritable who’s who of Australian comedy, the event is a celebration of our diverse country, headlined by the likes of Tahir, synonymous with the Fat Pizza, Housos and Swift and Shift Couriers hit TV, Neel Kolhatkar, a legendary YouTuber with over 85 million views, and Jeff Green, a British expat and former Sunday Times bestselling author who has a storied career in both the UK and Australia.

What started as a way to resuscitate live comedy after Covid hit, has turned into a massive event for Australians who are usually neglected by touring entertainment groups, especially in regional areas like ours.

“We thought we’d try and do something massive that goes to heaps of areas that haven’t been visited for a long time or possibly never before,” said the event’s producer, Betty Moxey.

Jeff Green says he’s looking forward to coming back to Broken Hill.

“I actually have been to Broken Hill, and I love it,” Mr Green told us, pointing out he used to be a mineral processor before he became a stand-up comedian.

“I could have imagined myself 30 years ago working in Broken Hill on the mining side of things.

“I always say to people, when you go to Broken Hill, you need the periodic table just to find your way back to the CBD,” he quipped.

There’s a broad range of ages of performers and producer Ms Moxey is keen to see Neel Kolhatkar in action, believing he will appeal to a different audience than the others.

“Neel communicates to that Gen Z/Millennial kind of demographic,” Ms Moxey said.

“He’s been doing it since he was 14. He was a YouTuber before people knew what being a YouTuber was.

“He is just the perfect example of somebody to put on this line-up. I think young people will be excited to come and attend and hopefully find out about some other comedians too, along the way.

“It is not something you want to miss out on. It’s such a rare opportunity to see a jam-packed line up of familiar faces and some new ones and you’re just going to laugh. It’s just a good night out.”

Jeff Green agrees, saying “one of the great things about a bill is there’s seven comics, so it’s great value.

“I guarantee they’ll be laughing from start to finish because I’ve played Broken Hill before and I remember how much fun it was.”
