Haunting on Patton St

The streets of Broken Hill will become spooky tonight with children – and adults – getting into the Halloween spirit by dressing up to trick-or-treat.

With many in town adorning their houses with decorations, one local resident, Chrissy Slattery, went even further, constructing a walk-through Halloween haunted house and maze at her Patton St address.

With the entrance to enter the unknown shielded, those that walk through will be given a fright as to what might be hiding around the corner, with a display involving all manner of ghouls, witches, skeletons, and more.

A tradition she’s been doing for the last four years, this year’s installation is her biggest yet, telling the Barrier Truth they wanted to use more space this year, adding to the ability to include more props and animatronics.

“People are loving it. I opened it on Friday, Saturday, and Monday, and I reckon I’ve probably had roughly 700 people come through,” she said.

“Having five children, I loved Halloween growing up. We used to do the South run as kids. But I think my kids hate Halloween now I’m doing the maze! They, and my husband, do help though.

“It took probably just over two weeks to build. Last year, we had a massive storm so this year I thought I would enclose most of it just so I didn’t have to lose most of my props. It was quite easy once the temporary fencing went up. Just time consuming.”
