Firies join Beat the Burn

Broken Hill Station 238 firefighters Kristy Ramsay and Saraiha Rakete are heading off to join fellow Fire and Rescue NSW staff from around the state to help raise money for the Burns Unit at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and they’re calling on locals to back them.

The Burn’s Unit is the Paediatric arm of the NSW Severe Burns Service and is the referral centre for all major paediatric burns across NSW.

The Burns Unit is 002 Station of Fire & Rescue NSW and is close to the heart of all FRNSW Firefighters, so over five days from March 10 to 15, FRNSW and ACT firefighters will be laying down their hoses in support of kids with life changing burn injuries.

Over the week, firefighters – including Kristy and Saraiha – will hiking 40km through the rugged landscape of Kosciuszko National Park and also swim from Jindabyne to Cub Island knowing that the pain they experience is nothing compared to what kids with severe burns have endured.

“Saraiha and I are excited to get together with colleagues across the state to help raise money to help kids with burns being cared for in the burns unit at Westmead,” Ms Ramsay told the Truth this week.

“This is our first year of fundraising for Beat the Burn and we’ve raised $1800 so far including donations from the Silver City Workies Club who donated $250, the Y’s Men’s Club with their donation of $500, and all up $1000 from community members so we’re very grateful for contributions made so far,” said Ms Ramsay.

“We’d love to see locals turn up to Mitre 10 for our sausage sizzle next weekend where we’ll have a fire truck or two for kids to check out on the day.”

Funds raised are used by the Burns Unit for research, and to purchase expensive equipment. These additional raised funds ensure young burns’ survivors have access to the latest techniques in pain and scar management, and their families are given the support they require during these difficult times.

Ms Ramsay and Ms Rakete will be hosting a sausage sizzle at Mitre 10 at 108 Galena St from 9am on Sunday February 25 to help raise money for Beat the Burn.
