Fifty strong team in cemetery tidy-up

The community, spurred on by Tidy Towns and several other volunteer groups around town, have shown up in force to clear the weeds at the Broken Hill cemetery.

The issues, with weeds in particular, has become a major local and visitor topic. Barely a week goes by without the Barrier Truth receiving several complaints about the unkempt city cemetery.

This past Thursday, a large group descended on the cemetery to eliminate the weeds that have been growing quickly thanks to the regular bouts of rain and hot weather.

The 50 strong group put in a solid two hours of clean up, and clearing an entire section of the cemetery of weeds and rubbish.

“It’s an absolutely incredible turnout,” Tidy Towns chairman Dave Gallagher told the Barrier Truth.

“To have so many people show up, I’m blown away. I’d like to thank Lions Quota, Tidy Towns, and of course the general public for giving a couple of hours of their time. It really is a credit to them.”

But the job is far from over and focus turns to the Clean Up Australia Day cemetery clean up, which is taking place on March 4 so as not to clash with the Imperial Lakes clean up. Starting at 7.30am yet again all you need to bring is a hat, some sunscreen and your community spirit.

“Any service clubs want to come out and give us an hour, even half an hour, that would be great. We’ll get the clean up done and we will supply the great Australian tradition of a sausage sizzle after the event,” Mr Gallagher said.
