Duke of Cornwall Park upgrade

Preparation is now underway for the $650,000 upgrade of Duke of Cornwall Park.

The upgrade includes the installation of modern toilets and amenities and the renovation of the dilapidated tennis courts and fencing.

One court will be resurfaced and retained purely for tennis, while the other will be converted into a hybrid court suitable for both tennis and basketball. Both courts will feature a new Dreamcourt® hard-court sporting surface.

Council’s General Manager, Jay Nankivell, predicted the renovations would be welcomed by park users and the community.

“The Duke of Cornwall Park has probably been an underutilised asset in the community. Primarily because the courts and toilets were just so old,” he said.

“This project will give the park a much-needed amenity upgrade for users and also provide a new flexible public recreation space for the many locals who enjoy tennis and basketball.”

We dropped by the Duke of Cornwall Park this week where local families confirmed Mr Nankivell’s prediction.

“An upgrade here is fantastic news,” said recently returned Broken Hill local Stephen Cicak who was visiting the park with his son, Finn. “This is a great little park close to home. Finn and I will definitely be here regularly to play tennis and other activities on the courts after the upgrades. Can’t wait!”

Ebony Eglinton was also at the park with her young son. “It’s great to see money being spent on keeping our city beautiful,” said Ms Eglinton. “Ari and I will definitely be back here as the Sturt Park skate park sometimes isn’t ideal for smaller children.”

Construction will begin this week and is expected to continue until mid-March. Users are advised that there will be restricted access to areas of the park that are undergoing renovation.

The Duke of Cornwall project has been funded by Broken Hill City Council and the NSW Government through the Regional Housing Fund.
