Community invite to BIU Band practice night

BIU Band in 2021 preparing for a performance

The famous Barrier Industrial Union (BIU) Band will be holding a practice night tomorrow – Thursday – for members of the community who would like to listen to some first rate brass band music.

Musical Director Kyla Vine told the Truth opening up the practice night to an audience is twofold – it allows members of the public to experience performances by the band outside of their traditional concerts, and also provides an opportunity for those interested in joining the band to register their interest.

“We will be playing some old favourites including Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head, and Hogan’s Heroes March, and pieces new to the band such as The Rose, I’m Still Standing, and It’s Not Unusual,” said Ms Vine.

The traditional march, and solo performances by Mark Curtis and Kyla Vine will also be played for those who attend.

The BIU Band’s connection to Broken Hill dates back more than 100 years, and despite falling membership levels in recent decades, Ms Vine says the current membership, “are very enthusiastic and committed”.

The band has 14 players, but they are always ready to welcome new players.

“For anyone who plays a brass instrument but has come to town without it, we have instruments to lend,” Ms Vine says.

She added, “at the moment we are lucky to have a talented visiting player amongst our ranks, but we will be saying farewell to Damien soon, and one of our trombone players also will leave soon to winter in the warmer climate of Darwin. So, tomorrow’s open practice night is a great time to showcase our wonderful sound for the listeners.”

Following the practice, the BIU Band will provide supper to attendees, and biscuits and coffee will be available during the show.

Music will begin at 7:30pm tomorrow evening at the BIU Band Hall in Beryl St, next to the Soccer Complex, and the event is free.
