Colourful end to year at Theatre 44

Sunday will be a festive and key performance for the Broken Hill Repertory Society as they farewell 2022 and celebrate the recent hard work that saw a refresh of the outside of the Theatre.

Two volunteers – Gary Bowden from GB Records, and his mate Chris Dougherty repainted the exterior of the building, working hard with paint donated by Globe Home Hardware and blue metal donated locally.

And to celebrate the finished job, Marilyn Harris and her students have been preparing a concert program.

At 2pm the theatre will come alive with the sounds of popular songs from the 1940s and musical comedy.

The festive season won’t be forgotten with the second half of the program devoted to a celebration of Christmas and will include a short play by Moxie Drama Group, which has been led this year by Alycia Pogson and Fran Kuras.

Tickets for the performance are available at the door with a nominal price of $12 for adults and a $10 concession, school aged children can attend for just $8 and EFTPOS will be available.

The canteen will also be in operation with all proceeds of the day going to Theatre 44.

Broken Hill Repertory Society began life on 24th October 1944, towards the end of World War II and was once called ‘The best little theatre outside Sydney’.

The Society used the Police Boys Club until the Mine Managers Association provided an interest-free loan to build a theatre in 1963 and in homage to its origins the theatre was named Theatre 44.

Constantly moving forward the Repertory Society has received invaluable assistance and support from Broken Hill City Council through the Community Assistance Grants scheme.

The Society is also grateful to the Country Music Association, who after folding up their group, donated all their sound equipment to the Repertory Society.

In another valuable coup the Society is delighted to welcome Armando Licul who has come on board to add his vast expertise and experience to the theatre.

His initial outreach to his contacts in the world of theatre has resulted in the promise of donations of a large amount of technical equipment, which the society could otherwise not afford.

Armando is also writing a play to be produced early in the new year, which is by all accounts very funny.

Another valuable addition to the team is Deb Hunt, who is organising a production of the musical ‘Reedy River’ in June 2023, which is about the shearers strike of 1891.

Musical direction will be by Marilyn Harris and stage direction by Lyn Collingwood, of ‘Home and Away’ fame.

The call is going out for 10 country style men who can sing, at least a little, and two female performers.

Auditions will be held in February with Deb and Marilyn hopefully that there is some undiscovered talent in the community that would like to come and join in the fun.

You can email Marilyn at [email protected] for a copy of the script.

Any inquiries can be made by phoning Marilyn Harris on 0413 905 048.
