Celtic gets a kick out of Council grant

Celtic United new soccer balls

With Broken Hill Soccer Association (BHSA) nearing the upcoming season, Celtic United Soccer Club has been given a leg-up, using a grant from Council to buy 100 new soccer balls.

“That sort of investment helps us in a few ways,” Celtic United Soccer Club President, Martin Thrift, told the Barrier Truth.

“Obviously, there’s a big relief off our backs because that’s quite a deal of money that we have to find otherwise.

“A lot of our old balls were really nearing the end of their useful life. The kids have now got some nice new soccer balls that are in great condition for them to train with. Having as much good equipment as you can provide, it makes life a little bit more enjoyable. It means they’re not playing with half flat balls or fighting over the two or three good ones.”

The club held its registration day on the weekend, with Mr Thrift saying there was a good turnout of new and returning faces.

“Probably the only area that we need to strengthen would be our Under 14 and Under 17 teams. Didn’t get many come down, so we’ll be doing a lot of phone calls, making sure if people are coming back,” he said.

“But, we’re still open to kids of all ages and all abilities. We like to think of ourselves as a very inclusive club and we’ve just rolled out a coaching curriculum developed with our namesake over in Scotland and that will help our coaches.

“The senior season’s building steadily. We’ve got a good list of names, but once again, everybody is still welcome. We’re building a competitive A Grade side, and we’re building a solid base of numbers for B Grade for people that want to just come and have a bit of fun.

“Last year we rolled out brand new strips for the seniors and we’re looking to do that again this year so if there are any businesses that would like to get their name on the Celtic kit, get in contact with us.”
