Spring School Holiday Guide

Term 3 of the 2023 school year is done and dusted, with students looking forward to a two-week break as the September/October school holidays begin.

Children and families alike will be searching for activities to do for all ages in town, which is why we’ve compiled this handy list of events!

Lights Camera Play! Filmmaking workshops (FREE) – Westside Plaza – 5 Galena St – 08 8088 3833

The Perfect Light Film Festival will be hosting free hands-on workshops for budding young filmmakers from 12-17 years of age at Westside Plaza from 9.30am-11.30am on Thursday, September 28 and Friday, September 29.

Attendees will be given tips and tricks of the film industry before being taken through the steps to create their own masterpiece. Organisers will have all the equipment ready for the class, however, encourage those attending to bring a notebook and a phone, camera, or recording device if possible.

Tie-dyeing workshops (FREE) – Broken Hill City Library – 249 Blende St – 08 8080 3460

The City Library will be running six free tie-dyeing workshops across various days of the school holidays – Tuesday, September 26 (10am-10.45am and 11am-11.45am), Tuesday, October 3 (2.30pm-3.15pm and 3.30pm-4.15pm), and Wednesday, October 4 (10.30am-11.15am and 2.30pm-3.15pm).

Open to anyone and everyone, those who attend the workshops will learn the art of tie-dyeing through various techniques to create unique and colourful designs for their very own tote bag. All necessary materials will be provided, but bookings are essential.

“The Great Dane” Magic Show (FREE) – Broken Hill City Library – 249 Blende St – 08 8080 3640

Prepare to be spellbound as magician Dane Certificate – also known as “The Great Dane” – comes to the City Library for a magic show on Tuesday, October 3 from 11am-12pm where he’ll mesmerise the audience with his mind-bending tricks and extraordinary skills.

School Holiday Program ($15-$25) – Broken Hill Art Exchange – 313 Argent St – 08 8088 4698

Ray Meandering is hosting a school holiday program at The Art Exchange from 11am-3pm on Tuesday, October 3 and Thursday, October 5 aimed at young people 10-16 years of age.

The program will see her and those who attend working with paint and found materials to create artworks. The cost associated with the program is $15 for members of The Art Exchange or $25 for others.

Paw Patrol ‘Let’s Play Sessions’ (FREE-$17) – Silver City Cinema – 41 Oxide St – 08 8088 1777

As well as various school holiday screenings of the latest blockbusters tailored for the whole family, the Silver City Cinema has introduced their ‘Let’s Play Sessions’ for the newly released Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie at 10am on Friday, September 29, Sunday, October 1, and Tuesday, October 3.

The sessions are designed so that families can bring children under the age of five to see a movie they might not sit still, keep quiet, or stay awake for, with the understanding that every parent or carer is in the same boat so as not to feel so bad for any loud talking, laughing, crying, yelling, or dancing by the kids.

Ngatyi Arts Blak Markets (FREE) – Albert Kersten Mining and Minerals Museum – Corner Crytal and Bromide St – 08 8080 3501

Ngatyi Arts has partnered with Blak Markets and the Broken Hill City Art Gallery for the opening of the Maari Ma Indigenous Art Awards on Friday, September 29 from 5.30pm-7.30pm at the Albert Kersten Mining and Minerals Museum (GeoCentre).

Market stalls will be set up to sell a diverse range of products from regional Aboriginal creatives. The exhibition runs until Friday, December 8.

Abilities Unleased Program (FREE) – Broken Hill Civic Centre – 31 Chloride St – 02 8763 1223

Disability Sports Australia is delivering an event to children between 5-18 years of age living with a sensory, physical, or intellectual disability at the Civic Centre on Tuesday, October 3 from 10am-1pm.

The event will provide children with the opportunity to experience mainstream sports in a positive and inclusive environment with the use of adaptive equipment. Specialised coaches, with the support of students from local universities and community organisations, will facilitate the modified sporting activities for the participants throughout the day.

Pottery workshop ($30-$80) – Desert Moon Creative Art Space – 616 Chapple St – 0424 343 837

The Desert Moon Creative Art Space is holding a school holiday pottery workshop on Wednesday, October 4 from 11am-2pm. The workshop is designed to inspire creativity while having lots of fun, with students able to build a range of items while learning techniques to ignite creative thinking. Attendees are asked to bring their own morning tea and a drink bottle.

Kids’ painting session ($35) – Desert Moon Creative Art Space – 616 Chapple St – 0424 343 837

The Desert Moon Creative Art Space is inviting kids 6-12 years of age to a painting session on Thursday, September 28 from 2pm-3.30pm. Those who attend will be guided by an experienced art teacher to create a fabulous and fun painting of a cupcake to take home and show off. Kids can bring their own nibbles to snack on while creating their colourful paintings.

Music workshops (FREE) – GOOUF Hall – 161 Blende St – 0478 489 228

The House That Dan Built is hosting a free music workshop for young people 12-25 years of age at GOOUF Hall across four days – Tuesday, September 26 to Friday, September 30 (from 10am-3pm each day). A full-day 10am-3pm workshop on Saturday, September 31 is also available to 10–18-year-olds.

Sydney-based artists, composers, and performers will be coming to Broken Hill for the workshop where over the week participants will make their very own film clip with each day related to different parts of the process from songwriting, recording, animation, and editing. A Showcase will be held on Saturday, September 31 from 3pm-4pm.

Picnic Train – Queen Elizabeth Park – 197 Brazil St – 08 8080 3300

The Penrose Park Picnic Train will operate at Queen Elizabeth Park on Wednesday, September 27 from 10am-1pm for kids to climb aboard the iconic train and experience the train with a short little ride. The kiosk will be open during the three-hour window for food and refreshments.

Museums Passport (FREE) – Visitor Information Centre – 23-27 Bromide St – 08 8080 3560

City Council has, together with 12 participating museums in Broken Hill and Silverton, created a free Passport for locals and visitors to encourage them to visit and learn of the history connected to the area as the 140-year celebrations connected to the discovery of the Line of Lode continue.

Passports can be collected from the Visitor Information Centre and once the passport has been stamped at each location, can be returned to collect a commemorative 140th anniversary medallion. As a reminder that while the passport is free, some museums may have entry fees.

Holiday Programs ($165) – Silver City Riding Academy – 385 Brookfield Ave – 0422 054 828

Silver City Riding Academy will be inviting children to participate in their school holiday program with full-day programs from 10am-3pm on Tuesday, September 26, Thursday, September 28, Tuesday, October 3, and Thursday, October 5.

Each child is given a pony of their own for the day where, across five hours, will partake in hands-on activities including, but not limited to, horse riding, feeding horses, equine art with chalk, apple in the bucket, and learning about the cares and responsibilities of ponies. With limited numbers available, bookings are essential and can be done best via their Facebook page.

School holidays programs will take place each weekday (except Monday, October 2 due to the Labour Day public holiday) during the next two weeks at Broken Hill PCYC to provide a space where primary-school aged children are able to have fun in a safe and caring environment.

From week one events such as Construction Day, Camping Day, Harry Potter Day, Funky Sock Day, and Star Wars Day, to week two events including Hero Day, Battle Day, PCYC Show Day, and Farm Day, it is sure to cater to anyone’s interests. Bookings are open, but spots are limited.

OOSH for Vacation Care ($10.78-$86) – The Y Burke Ward – 185 Rakow St – 1300 009 679

School holiday programs will take place each weekday (except Monday, October 2 due to the Labour Day public holiday) during the next two weeks at The Y Burke Ward for children enrolled at school or school-aged for a series of activities catered to keep them entertained, engaged, and explore their adventurous side.

From a Talent Show, Water Play Day, an excursion to The Y Integrated Wellness Centre, Sports Day, and Pyjama Day in week one, to Wacky Arts Day, Sensory Play Day, Technology Day, and Funbox Friday during week two.
