Broken Hill rail line reopens

See the first train on the reopened Parkes to Broken Hill stretch of railway line which has reopened today for the first time since record-breaking floods caused damage to the track four months ago, forcing its closure.

Passenger services from Sydney to Broken Hill on Monday restart this coming Monday, January 30 with the Broken Hill to Sydney commute scheduled to leave on Tuesday, January 31.

The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) says since October, more than 35 sites along the railway line required repair across 500km of track.

More than 120 personnel worked in excess of 36,000 hours to deliver and use materials – including 43,500 tonnes of rocks and ballast – across the various sites.

The first service to use the repaired track was a freight train on Tuesday – see the Barrier Truth Facebook page for a video of that first run on the repaired track.
