If you’ve been following updates from the Broken Hill Kart Club Incorporated (BHKCI), you’ll know that 2023 was an exciting year that saw new executives voted in and the momentum grow along with membership numbers as go-kart enthusiasts from around the region pulled together to revamp Johnson Speedway in preparation for Round 1 of the 2024 go-kart race season.
Sunday March 3 will see go-karts rev up to hit the smallest (and some say fastest) track in the country for the first race meeting since Covid lockdowns. BHKCI President Hayden Slattery says he can’t thank Broken Hill City Council and the community enough for the ongoing support to get go-karts back on the track.
“There are local businesspeople I’d like to publicly thank for their contribution to cleaning up the track and helping to build and repair infrastructure, but most have asked to remain anonymous. They’re just doing it to help the club,” said Mr Slattery.
“But whether he likes it or not I will say that Bell’s Milk Bar is a major sponsor of the club and owner, Matt Spresser, continues to go above and beyond in his role as Vice President. So, we can’t thank him enough for his continued dedication,” he laughed.
“Broken Hill’s community spirit is still alive and well. There’s something about go-karts that gets people excited – especially families,” he said. “Creating a friendly club where families can connect through a shared interest in go-karting is what it’s all about for us.
“The Johnson Speedway track is in really good condition to start race season. We’re all super excited and very grateful for everyone who has helped to get us to the point that we’re ready to race,” said the proud club president.
The gates to Johnson Speedway – just 2km out of town on Menindee Rd, will open at 8am on Sunday March 3 with practise starting at 9am and races commencing at 11am.
Spectators are welcome to come along to witness all the fun, thrills and hopefully not too many spills from the designated viewing areas.
The club requires more officials to help out during race season so if you’re keen to chip in to help keep our local kids on track learning lifelong skills, you can start the online training process to become an official by visiting: karting.net.au/administration/officials
