Broken Hill power gets the bird

Broken Hill power outage

Residents of the Silver City had their weekend plans interrupted on Sunday by a bird which caused a massive power outage hitting around 4000 homes and businesses in Central Broken Hill, Railway Town and the CBD.

The unplanned interruption, as Essential Energy’s website calls it, hit just before 12.30pm Sunday and continued for some people as late as 7pm.

“Essential Energy crews determined that the electricity network in Iodide Street was impacted by a bird, resulting in a small fire, and causing a power interruption for customers,” an Essential Energy spokesperson told the Truth.

“Crews commenced repairs, progressively restoring power to customers throughout the afternoon and into the early evening. The lights were back on for all customers just before 7pm.”

Essential Energy say there will be no compensation for customers and say anyone who may have experienced loss or damage as a result of “factors beyond Essential Energy’s control” should contact their insurer.
