Historic Astra Hotel on the market

Broken Hill Astra Hotel

An iconic piece of Broken Hill history is up for grabs. The Astra Hotel – at 393 Argent Street – is on the market and taking expressions of interest.

Also available to purchase alongside The Astra, or as a separate investment, is Café Alfresco.

The sale of the hotel and café combination is being taken care of by Savills Australia, a branch of the global real estate group who have been in the property market game since 1855.

But locals who are worried the current owners, the Trinder family, are leaving the Silver City need not fear. The sale is strictly the freehold, which means it is the buildings and not the businesses that are for sale, which means The Astra and its restaurants and cafes will continue to operate as per usual.

“We love doing what we are doing. I have a 20-year lease,” David Trinder, owner of The Astra complex told the Truth, adding, “so business will continue.”

Mr Trinder assures the community – who may have heard gossip to the contrary – that he and his wife Maryanne are not going anywhere. Quite the opposite, in fact, they are looking to grow the business.

“I believe this town is on the precipice of the best is yet to come,” Mr Trinder told us.

“This is a once in a generation opportunity to acquire a popular freehold going concern or freehold investment in an iconic Australian Outback location,” a Savills spokesperson says.

“Savills Hotels are pleased to bring to market, the Astra, Broken Hill, an iconic hotel in the heart of a thriving regional centre. The site is a popular tourist destination for many travellers, freight drivers and holiday goers driving through central Australia. Locally known as one of Broken Hill’s best-known venues, The Astra is a one-stop accommodation dining, entertainment, and events destination.”

The Astra has been a part of Broken Hill across three centuries, opening on July 14, 1886, as the Commercial Hotel. It has had many different incarnations and is most famously known as its current moniker.

The Astra is being offered for sale via expressions of interest (EOI), closing Friday April 14. Serious offers will be considered before the close date.
