Bark in the Park: Broken Hill Readies for Annual Dog Show

by Dylan Stone

Broken Hill’s Memorial Oval is set to host the annual Dog Show, co-hosted by the Silver City Kennel Club and the Ladies Kennel Club of Broken Hill, from Friday May 26 to Sunday May 28.

Six all-breeds championship shows will span the three-day event, beginning at 9 am each day. Judges from New South Wales and Queensland will assess the participating breeds.

Tanya Martyn, Secretary of the Silver City Kennel Club, expressed gratitude to their major sponsor, Blackhawk Petfood, along with Show-manager, I-envy, Orivet, and Rightpaw, for supporting the show.

Martyn invited the community to attend the free event and advised attendees to leave their dogs at home. The annual show, she said, presents a great opportunity for locals to learn about different breeds. “This year, we have a couple of interesting breeds participating in the shows, including the Swedish Vallhund and Doguedebordeaux,” Martyn said.

Popular breeds like Golden Retrievers, Labradors, and German Shepherds will be on display over the weekend. However, Martyn added, “a new breed to Australia, the Miniature American Shepherd, will also participate in our show.” The breed has only been recognised in Australia for about a year, presenting a unique opportunity for show-goers.

Claire Needham, Secretary of the Ladies Kennel Club of Broken Hill, expressed her excitement for the event. She highlighted the community impact, saying the show is not just about the dogs, but also about “supporting and showcasing the community and drawing people from interstate.”

Refreshments, including hot food, cold drinks, tea, coffee, and cakes, will be available throughout the weekend. For more information, contact Tanya Martyn at [email protected] or on 0447 215 596.
