Motorists heading to Adelaide across the next fortnight are being asked by the South Australia-based Royal Automobile Club (RAA) to reconsider the routes of their commutes, as many roads will be closed east of the CBD due to the Adelaide 500 car race.
This year’s key road closures are:
Wakefield Rd (from November 25 – December 8)
Dequetteville Terrace (from November 26 – December 6)
Bartels Rd (from November 26 – December 6)
Hutt St (Bartels/Pirie to Wakefield) (from November 26 – December 6)
Fullarton Rd (contra-flow for northbound with speed restrictions near Britannia Roundabout) (from November 26 – December 6)
RAA Senior Manager Safety and Infrastructure, Charles Mountain, advised anyone who needs to travel through the area to allow more time for any delays to their journey, especially during peak periods, with RAA routinely monitoring conditions.
“With the Adelaide 500 returning for the first time in almost two years, it’s likely some motorists will get caught out by long delays if they aren’t prepared for road closures,” Mr Mountain said.
“An RAA survey in 2018 showed Tuesday and Wednesday were the worst days for congestion when the race restrictions were in place, when travel speeds fell below 15kph for more than 50 sections of road heading into the city.
“Because we haven’t seen how the race being held at this time of year affects the road network, we will be conducting similar research for the first few days of restrictions in order to advise which roads and routes are being most impacted.”
