Netball league needs helpers

A call out for volunteers has been made to help run Broken Hill’s local netball league.

With the new season fast approaching, organisers say they need more people onboard to strengthen the management of the competition.

Leah Carr, Vice President and Registrar of the Broken Hill Netball Association, said office bearers have dwindled since the annual general meeting (AGM) last November.

“We’ve lost a fair bit of help,” she said. “At this present time, we have three executive members and one committee member.”

A number of volunteers stepped down from their roles at the AGM, as current members seek immediate replacements.

About six key roles are currently vacant. These are: Assistant Treasurer, Assistant Secretary, Assistant Registrar, Dispute Arbitrator, NetSetGo coordinator and a canteen assistant.

Mrs Carr believes there are a capable people in the community that can fill these positions and placed a special emphasis on the NetSetGo role.

“Even if someone wants to give an hour in the canteen, we’ll gladly accept their time,” she said.

“We’ve got no coaching for those young kids who have that hunger so that we keep them playing when they are older.

“Once you lose the interest of the children, you lose them forever.”

Up to 40 children (aged 5-10) normally participate in the program that teaches them basic skills while they have fun and make new friends.

So far, a volunteer has shown interest in the Broken Hill representative coach role that is tasked to select players for events like carnivals.

The local league is expected to start this month with players eager to get back into action.

There are usually four junior divisions (ranging from under 9s to under 17s) and three senior grades.

Mrs Carr said if the recruitment of more volunteers does not occur, it will be a tough ask for the current members in the upcoming season.

“In my time we’ve had seasons where we’ve had few numbers,” she said. “It can be done but it will be very difficult.”

The Broken Hill Netball Association’s 2022 season will play 12 rounds before the finals in June.

Local netball courts are scheduled for redevelopment once the grand final has been completed.
