Y’s Men’s Scholarship Applications now open

Y's Men's Workies Scholarship

Last week, the Barrier Truth published a feature on Cooper Wielozynski, who urged those heading to University in 2024 to seek out and apply for scholarships.

This week, the Y’s Men’s Club of Broken Hill and the Silver City Workingmen’s Club are reminding future University students to apply for one of their two $5000 scholarships currently on offer.

The two scholarships have been created by the Y’s Men’s Club and the Workies Club for local students furthering their education post-High School and are intended to be an investment into the future of Broken Hill.

“We hope that the successful candidates will return to Broken Hill post studies,” a spokesperson from the Y’s Men’s Club said. “This scholarship’s purpose is to ease the costs of living for full time University students.”

The Scholarships will allow for an initial payment of $2500 for two successful applicants, with a secondary payment of $2500 at the commencement of the applicants’ second Semester of studies, pending the successful completion of their first Semester.

To be successful, applicants need to demonstrate financial or other hardships that may inhibit their ability to access tertiary education, and a selection panel consisting of members of the Y’s Men’s Club, and two independent community members, will be assembled by the Y’s Men’s Club to review the applicants.

Stewart Williams received the Scholarship in 2019, and from this Scholarship, he recently completed his Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) at the University of South Australia.

In an interview with the Truth he noted that the Scholarship “helped with moving costs and buying the resources [such as] text books [and] stationery… [that] I needed at the start of my degree, which gave me one less thing to worry about.”

He went on to add that he “would definitely recommend that people looking to study apply if able too as every little bit helps.”

Applications for the Scholarship close on January 25th, and application forms can be collected from the YMCA or the Aquatic Centre.

Interviews will then take place on February 3rd, with an announcement of the successful applicants to be made shortly after.

For more information, applicants can contact the Workies Club on 08 8087 5337, or the Y’s Men’s Club’s Geoff Webb on 0429 047 624.
