Silver City Cup back in the race

After a three-year gap, the iconic Silver City Cup racehorse meet is back, returning in a little over four weeks after being out of action due to COVID-19.

The event returns on November 12, a little later than its usual October date, with a six-race meet at the Broken Hill Racecourse.

Race five will be the big one, the titular Silver City Cup.

The ‘family friendly race meet’ is aiming to be even more family friendly this time around, with a slew of fun awards and competitions for people of all ages to get involved in. Among them include several fun fashion competitions – the Miss Teen award for 13–17-year-olds girls, and the Cool Dude award for boys in the same age group make their debut this year.

Horse racing and fashion often go hand in hand and there are a whole heap of other fashion prizes to be won in the Most Elegant Lady, Best Dressed Gent and the Trendiest Chick awards.

The office in Blende Street will open for people to buy tickets in just a couple of weeks, and this year there will be the option to buy your tickets online.

Silver City Racing Club President, Dave Gallagher, is very proud of the Cup’s family friendly status and is at pains to point out nothing has changed in that regard.

“We are the family race meet in Broken Hill,” Mr Gallagher said.

“If a family wants to come out and just throw a blanket on the ground, we have no problem with that.

“We are going to have facepainting, merry-go-rounds, hair braiding, and jumping castles for the kids,” Mr Gallagher told us.

“Mum gets looked after, the kids get looked after, Dad is taken care of so the whole family can enjoy themselves out there.”

There will also be plenty of places to have a punt, with the TAB having a presence at the track. There will also be five bookies there including the world’s oldest bookie, our very own Doug Carroll.

“Dougie Carroll will be there, for sure, large as life,” said Mr Gallagher. “It’s not a race meet without Dougie.”

It’s set to be a truly spectacular day for the whole family, so get out of the house and get down to the Broken Hill Racecourse to enjoy a great family day at the iconic Silver City Cup.

Head to the Silver City Cup Races – Broken Hill Facebook page for all the latest information or head to silvercitycup.simpletix.com. to buy your tickets online.

Online ticketing will be as easy to use as showing a QR code on your phone or printing your ticket off and presenting it at the gate.

There is still the option of getting your ticket the old-fashioned way when the office at 353 Blende Street at the RDA Office opens in just a couple of weeks.
