Broken Hill has had its third wettest start to the year since comprehensive records began in 1952.

So far this year, from January to April, 292.4 mm have been recorded at Broken Hill airport, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).

This is more than triple the average rainfall for the first third of the year, which is 89.1 mm.

In 1974, rainfall peaked at 432.2 mm and a British rhyme recited in Broken Hill schoolyards at this time was:

Doctor Foster went to Gloucester
In a shower of rain
He stepped in a puddle
Right up to his middle
And never went there again

The second highest rainfall for the first four months of the year fell in 2011, when 311.6 mm was recorded.

Locals will recall the drought in 2004, when January to April rainfall was just 9.8 mm.
