Meet Silverton’s newest resident

Alice the camel and her first calf, who you can help name.

It was a momentous day at Silverton Outback Camels on Monday when Alice gave birth to her first calf. The cute and furry baby was born at 10am Monday morning, and now our readers get the chance to pick his name.

“We weren’t even expecting it, we just walked past this morning and there he was,” co-owner of Silverton Outback Camels, Petah Devine, told us.

Alice was pregnant for at least 12 and at most 14 months. A camel mother can even stop mid-labour and hold onto her baby for weeks if she feels it isn’t the right time.

Mum is doing well and is clearly very proud of her little bundle of joy.

The Barrier Truth, along with Silverton Outback Camels, is running a competition where the person whose name is picked also wins a free 30-minute camel ride at

Silverton Outback Camels.

Simply email your suggestion, along with your name and contact details to [email protected], or drop your suggestion at out into the office. The winner will be drawn live on Facebook at 5pm, Tuesday, October 4.

In the meantime, for a spot of inspiration, check out the pic our photographer took of the cute new calf before he’d even found his feet.
