Local winners are grinners at World Gin Awards

Broken Hill Distillery’s Paul Hanna enjoyed a win at the 2024 World Gin Awards in London, sharing the special moment with his niece and UK-based distillery ambassador, Lizzie Hanna, and Broken Hill ambassador, Jason Bacot.

“We’re very pleased to have walked away with Gold for Country Winner (Australia) in the Matured Gin category for our 60% ABV [alcohol by volume] Far West Gin, ranking it now in the top 13 at the World Gin Awards,” said Paul after the award ceremony (5am ACDT Friday February 23).

The Barrier Truth caught up with Broken Hill Distillery’s co-owner, Paul’s brother Eric Hanna.

“Paul and I wrote a business plan three years ago that included creating award winning products in the distillery that we built onto the Tydvil Hotel, so having a gin win gold this year helps us to shine a bright light on Broken Hill,” said Eric. “We’re extremely proud of the team effort.

“Paul is in London rubbing shoulders with the best gin distillers in the world,” says Eric. “We’re here in the outback putting faith purely in our tastebuds and instinct while going up against distillers with science degrees who work out of labs, so any win is a true testament to the honesty of locals who help us to perfect our products,” he said. “The town has supported us monumentally and we can’t thank them enough.”
