LAROI gets his own doco

The life of former Broken Hill local, now global Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter The Kid LAROI – real name Charlton Howard – will be featured in a feature-length Amazon Prime documentary, Kids Are Growing Up, on Thursday, February 29.

The film chronicles the Australian rapper’s life and musical journey from his upbringing as an unknown musician to his global rise to fame and becoming a teenage sensation, selling out shows within three years.

He gained mainstream success when he collaborated with Justin Bieber on Stay, and ahead of his first world tour and debut studio album.

Produced by OBB Pictures and directed by Michael D Ratner, the documentary captures a time where the Kid LAROI enters adulthood, navigating the pressures of his rapid fame, searching for true happiness and how to handle outsized expectations from the public, those close to him, and himself, as well as his struggles with mental health, first love, and the death of his mentor, Juice WRLD.

“I can’t wait for audiences to see this behind-the-scenes portrayal of my journey, which perfectly encapsulates some of the most rewarding and challenging years of my life and career so far,” The Kid LAROI said.

Director Ratner – a fellow Grammy nominee and OBB Media Founder and CEO – said he was thankful to The Kid LAROI for letting him tell the story of the artist’s life so far.

“LAROI’s story is truly inspirational. While he’s just 20-years-old, he’s managed to change his circumstances through his artistry and drive, while navigating anxiety, grief, and a variety of issues that his audience can relate to,” Mr Ratner said.

Head of Film, Streaming, and Theatrical at Amazon MGM Studios, Courtenay Valenti, added, “over the span of just a few years, The Kid LAROI has catapulted into a world of global stardom. This documentary explores his meteoric rise to fame and his personal triumphs and tribulations along the way.”

Kids Are Growing Up: A Story About a Kid Named LAROI will be available to stream via Prime Video on Thursday, February 29. An official trailer – as well as a sneak peak of The Kid LAROI’s new song featured in the documentary – was released this past week, with the full song to be released on Friday, March 1.
