John Carney Receives OAM

This Wednesday saw one of Broken Hill’s most dedicated community servants, John Carney, receive his Order of Australia Medal [OAM].

Mr. Carney received his medal for his service to the Broken Hill community. His incredible work spans more than 50 years, dating all the way back to the 1960s.

Alongside being a Justice of the Peace for the last 30 years, Mr Carney is also involved with the local RSL and has been for over 50 years.

You can also find him working tirelessly for the Lions Club. If you wish to congratulate him – you can usually find him selling raffle tickets at Westside Plaza.

Mr. Carney admitted it was an overwhelming feeling to finally receive the award and that he is very grateful to the mystery person (or persons) who nominated him.

“I would like to thank whomever it was who nominated me, along with my wife Nola and my entire family.”

He received the award at a ceremony in Sydney with New South Governor Margaret Beazley, who handed the OAM to Mr Carney.
