Cox’s 50-Goal Triumph

Jessica Cox is enjoying the season of her life. As a member of the dynamic West side that stormed to a first place finish this year, she has distinguished herself by scoring a staggering 50 goals this season.

With her side, West Panthers, featuring in this weekend’s Broken Hill Soccer Association (BHSA) Women’s A League final, we chatted to Jessica about her feats this season.

Having been a West stalwart for 23 years, MS Cox was unequivocal when we asked her if this is the best campaign she had put together, “100%, yes,” she told the Truth.

The 50-goal milestone was not something she had initially set out to achieve. However, one extraordinary match led her to believe it might be within reach.

“I wasn’t thinking about it at the start of the season, but around the middle of the season I got 10 goals in one match, and I started thinking – ‘hey I might be a chance here’,” she told us.

A member of the legendary West Panthers Bugeja family, her Mum, Linda Bugeja, paid tribute to her goal scoring exploits.

“I am so proud of her. She’s had a really good season. I think, like a lot of girls, she has been inspired by the Women’s World Cup,” Ms Bugeja said.

When questioned about how she reached this remarkable milestone, Jessica was quick to commend her teammates.

“We have a great team dynamic. It’s been a great year to play with everyone. We are like a family. My teammates are just the best, when they found out I was so close to (scoring 50 goals) they just kept passing me the ball and when it finally happened it was just amazing,” Jessica told us.

Jessica and her West teammates will face off against St Joes this Saturday at O’Neill Memorial Park in the Women’s A Grade Grand Final, starting at 2pm.
