Small Businesses – HJS Painting & Decorating

Hayden Slattery enjoyed a busy start to 2023. His business, HJS Painting & Decorating, painted the new $16million Police Station, and just last week, the company repainted the NSW TAFE Building in Argent Street.

Mr Slattery has enjoyed a long association with Broken Hill and in 2010 his painting company officially opened its doors.

Born and raised in the Silver City, he moved to Adelaide when he was 18 years old where he began a painter’s apprenticeship.

Even in his younger days, Mr Slattery’s skill with the brush was noticed – he achieved an award for the Apprentice of the Year in his first, second, and third years, and in his fourth year, he was named the Overall Apprentice of the Year.

Confident of his abilities, Mr Slattery’s business launched in Adelaide, and the business expanded rapidly. A range of projects, from smaller paint jobs to larger commercial jobs, kept HJS Painting & Decorating busy.

In 2018, his family decided to move back to Broken Hill, and so too did the business. Mr Slattery immediately established a strong clientele, and he has ticked off a number of large and small jobs in the last five years.

He describes the recent repainting of the NSW TAFE Building as, “one of the biggest challenges I have faced in business for a while”.

It was what you might call a pinnacle of achievement, with a crane brought in to lift the painters to the top of the building, some 40 metres high, and part of the street cordoned off to allow the work to be completed. And the job was finished early too, on June 17.

The company has also recently repainted the façade of South Broken Hill Post Office, and has some 15 quotes for jobs which Mr Slattery and his team will complete in coming months.

Outside of work, Mr Slattery says he, “loves spending time with the family and mates,” and he also loves racing when he gets the opportunity with Formula Vee. He also coaches the South Under-9s footy, as his way of giving back to the community.

Mr Slattery told the Truth he loves Broken Hill, and that his business is “very grateful and humbled” with the support the community has shown his business, adding, “we thank everyone who has recommended HJS”.

As HJS Painting and Decorating continue to take bookings and quotes, Mr Slattery can be contacted on 0418 301 027, or via email at [email protected]
