Fresh produce pop-up

People in Broken Hill will be able to take advantage of a fresh produce pop-up happening at Memorial Oval on Wednesday, September 20 from 8am-11am.

A refrigerated truck from Sydney will make its way into town, filled to the brim with 12 pallets of fruits and vegetables, free to anyone who needs it.

The pop-up event is a partnership between JobLink Plus and Foodbank NSW and ACT and after previously putting an event on in Armidale last November, it was decided to bring the initiative to Broken Hill. The organisations are encouraging anyone to come along to the pop-up this Wednesday morning and fill their reusable shopping bags with fresh produce.

“Times are hard for everybody and having this come in, it will just help so many people,” Courtney Trenerry, JobLink Plus Youth Consultant., told the Barrier Truth.

“It’s all going to be free for the community. There’s no eligibility – it’s for everybody in Broken Hill. Anybody that’s in need, they can come down and they can grab it. There’s going to be heaps so we can try and provide as much food as we can for everybody, but it will operate on a ‘first-in, best-dressed’ basis.”.

“It’s a really big community event,” she says of Home in Place hosting a free BBQ throughout the morning, and a forklift donated by the Broken Hill High School, adding “everyone’s pitching in and it’s going to be a good event.”

The fresh produce pop-up is happening at Memorial Oval on Wednesday, September 20 from 8am-11am. People are encouraged to bring their own reusable bags, though there will be some available.
