Fresh Pizza on the rise

Broken Hill’s newest Pizza bar, Fresh Pizza, has just celebrated a hectic two months of trading, and owners Liam Wilson and Cristina Tolu could not be happier with how business is booming.

Liam, a Broken Hill local, has been a baker for 10 years, and has worked in Broken Hill, Adelaide, and even the Central Coast.

He has significant experience in making traditional Italian piadina (flat bread), and has a passion for making pizza.

Cristina was born in Rome, and graduated from University in Malta with a background in marketing and tourism.

A chance meeting in White Cliffs while Cristina was backpacking ignited a spark between the pair, which resulted in them moving to Broken Hill.

“We both have a passion for eating pizza and decided to buy an Ooni (portable pizza oven) to make our own at home,” said Liam.

As enthusiastic patrons of the community markets, Liam and Cristina considered adding pizza to their product offerings, and they tried their hand at selling pizzas at the markets in December 2019.

“It was very successful,” Cristina says. Word got around and soon they were being approached by locals to assist with fundraisers, catering events, and the New Years Eve Party in Sturt Park.

“We slowly, slowly, had a great little Fresh Pizza following,” Liam says.

By January 2022, Liam and Cristina made the decision to open a pizza shop, and by July last year premises was located.

Unfortuantely, as with many business plans, unforeseen circumstances arose, which meant the shop only opened two months ago, on June 30.

“Tthe shop has been popular ever since,” says Cristina. “The locals and our patrons have been very supportive and patient with us over these past two months, and we are very grateful to them.”

Liam says their point of difference in the industry is down to, “our pizzas are unique in that they are Italian-style, they are baked at 400 degrees on stone base ovens, and the dough is hand made fresh every day.”

Initially, Liam was conservative in the dough production, but he quickly increased the production to meet surging demand.

Fresh Pizza has been a dream come true for the pair, and as the business celebrates two months of servicing the community, they both say they make pizza because they simply love pizza”.

The shop is open from 5pm-8pm Thursday to Monday for pick-up and take-away at 127 Oxide St, and orders can be made by calling 0477 199 643.

Menus and other details can be found on the shop’s Facebook page at Fresh Pizza Broken Hill, and online at https://www.freshpizzabrokenhill.com
