Devoy and Robards steer Central to victory

A 99-run partnership between Nicholas Devoy and Zac Robards helped steer Central to an eight-wicket victory against South at Jubilee Oval on Saturday afternoon as the 2023/24 Barrier District Cricket League (BDCL) A-Grade season returned from its four-week break.

The Roos won the toss and elected to bat first and while opener Jamie Carlaw (four off 22) fell cheaply, a 51-run stand between fellow opening batter Nicholas Christos and captain Matthew Gray steadied the tide.

South lost 3/1 following Christos (41 off 56) being bowled by Devoy (3/12) as the Central pacer would find himself on a hat-trick, though couldn’t get the elusive third successive scalp. South’s vice-captain Michael Webeck would also depart first ball as he was bowled by Robards (4/9).

Gray (45 off 72) did much of the heavy lifting after seeing his team down 4/71, finding the boundary on seven occasions in a 45-run partnership with Ashley Christos (12 off 37) before Devoy and Robards combined for his wicket. In the end, South were all out for 131, setting Central a target of 132 for victory.

The Roos got off to the perfect start when they got the wicket Clinton Jones with the second ball of the innings with fellow opener Damon Pettitt (four off 21) also departing early. At 2/34, Central wouldn’t lose any more wickets as Devoy (44* off 61) and Robards (50* off 55) piled on the runs required within 22 overs on the way to the team’s third victory of the season.

Round 10 sees T20 fixtures take place in a doubleheader at Alma Oval on Saturday, January 20. South take on West in the first game of the afternoon from 12.30pm, while Central play North from 4pm.
