Cash splash as locals light the way for Santa

We might be living in the Outback, but Santa will certainly be able to find his way here thanks to the stunning Christmas light displays from local residents.

And it’s not just Santa who will be smiling – there’s $3500 up for grabs for the best displays.

The Christmas light displays on show around town are spectacular – from North to the South, Broken Hill has embraced the festive spirit.

The Barrier Truth, Vines Furniture 1 and Broken Hill City Council are encouraging more people to get involved, running a competition with a first prize of $2500 which has been offered by Vines Furniture 1 and a $1000 people’s choice award on offer from council with the winners to be announced on Christmas Eve.

Mayor Tom Kennedy says the council is proud to donate $1000 to the People’s Choice awards.

“Everyone that comes through town, at this time of the year, comments on how the community gets together puts on a great display.

“This brings the community together. Usually one house puts some lights up and then other houses in the street join in.

“It looks so good when several houses in the street have lights up.

“People going to all the effort, spending time and money on the decorations, really are doing a service to the community.

“It is not only all the time it takes to put them up, but also taking them down after Christmas,” Cllr Kennedy said.

Make sure your lights are shining bright as judges could pop along at any time.
