Broken Heel takes centre stage

The Broken Heel Festival officially kicked off on Thursday night with the train from Sydney rolling in and a packed crowd gathering at The Palace Hotel for the Welcome Party. Hosts Benjamin Starr and local drag artist Christina KneesUp warmed the crowd up in expectation for the next few days.

RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under season three contestant Rita Menu took centre stage next, strutting her stuff on stage and amongst the dazzled audience, before Peter Baecker got the crowd moving and grooving on the dancefloor, spinning 80s hits while putting on a high-energy show himself.

The events continued on Friday with various workshops and a flash mob dance rehearsal during the day before the night’s activities kicked off with the Frock On or Frock Off Party, headlined by Rhonda Burchmore, as many more campy performances formed a stacked lineup.

The festival continues today with the workshops at the pop-up shop (207 Argent St), but the main event will be the Town Square shows and street parade down Argent St. At night, it features Hans performing with accordion in hands, joined by his band, singers, and dancers, with the previous night’s talented performers taking to the stage again for round two.

Sunday gives festivalgoers a chance to wind down with drag bingo and an interactive screening of Priscilla at The Palace Hotel, along with a day out at Silverton, while Monday marks the recovery day out at Mt Gipps Outback Resort.
