North’s first defeat, South’s record win

Round 6 of the AFL Broken Hill Women’s competition is complete, and saw the North Bulldogs suffer defeat for the first time this season at the hands of the Central Magpies, while the South Roos dispatched the West Robins in a strong showing.

WEST V SOUTH

It was complete control from the opening bounce for South, running over the top of West in a dominant display at Jubilee Oval on Saturday, victorious to the tune of 113 points.

The Roos didn’t allow the Robins to get much possession to propel the home team forward enough, unable to hit the scoreboard across the four quarters.

On the attacking front for South, the side put the foot down at every chance, finishing the game with 28 scoring shots on the way to its biggest score and biggest winning margin of the season so far – beating last week’s 92-point victory, which also came against West.

Despite the 63-point margin at three-quarter time this week though, the Roos continued to pile on more goals, with an eight-goal final term stamping their authority on the result.

Georgia Ward and Melisaa Keenan kicked 11 goals between them for South, with Abbey Stevens the side’s other multiple goalkicker, getting on the scoreboard twice. Sienna Campbell, Georgia Gardner, Lila Parker, and India Timms each chipped in with one goal apiece.

CENTRAL V NORTH

At Memorial Oval, in the top-of-the-table clash, reigning premiers Central bounced back from last week’s defeat to break North’s undefeated start to the season, prevailing in a tight contest to finish 13-point victors. Not without their chances, Bulldogs endured a goalless second half as the Magpies took the game away, converting their scoring opportunities more so.

Sharp shooting from the Magpies across the entire match helped give them the edge in the end despite a greater amount of scoring shots from the Bulldogs, who kicked just four behinds after halftime. The visitors finished the match with their lowest score of the season so far.

Despite her team being on the losing end of the contest, North’s Makayla Berg was the leading goalkicker on the ground in this game, kicking each of her side’s two goals. For Central, there were five different goalkickers on the scoresheet, including co-captain Phoebe Knell, Emma Carapelloti who kicked her first goal of the season, and April Dempster and Nikki Phillips who each extended their consecutive goalscoring streaks to four games.
